Santa Barbara Rock Climbing
The most experienced and most highly qualified mountain guiding service in the Santa Barbara Mountains.
Santa Barbara Rock Climbing is owned and operated by founder and lead guide Alex Bury, a professional mountain guide with more than two decades of climbing, exploration, and guiding experience throughout the Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Ojai mountain ranges.
Alex has spent his career exploring and developing the cliffs, canyons, and remote terrain of the Southern Los Padres region. His routes include the hardest traditional climbs ever completed in the Topa Topa Mountains as well as the longest technical rock climb in the range.
Through years of professional guiding and deep backcountry exploration, Alex brings an exceptional level of terrain familiarity, judgment, and risk management to every outing in the Santa Barbara mountains.

Alex’s background includes:
• 15 years of full-time professional guiding in Santa Barbara’s mountain environments
• Official CalTopo Educational Ambassador
• Dozens of first ascents established throughout the Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Ojai backcountry
• Development of 5.12 traditional climbs, multi-pitch routes, and numerous sport climbs that have become community favorites
Many of Alex’s routes were established through extended solo exploration in remote terrain, often involving multi-day unsupported approaches deep in the Southern Los Padres backcountry.

Traditional Climbing and First Ascents
Over the past two decades, Alex has established dozens of first ascents across the Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Ojai mountain ranges.
Alex develops new routes using the traditional ground-up climbing style—placing protection as he climbs and committing to the line as it unfolds on the rock. This method preserves the natural character of the cliff and reflects the classic traditions of American rock climbing.
Within the Santa Barbara and Ventura mountain ranges, Alex is the only active climber consistently establishing new multi-pitch routes through unsupported backcountry exploration and ground-up ascent in this traditional style.
His routes include the hardest traditional climbs ever completed in the Topa Topa Mountains as well as the longest technical rock climb in the range.
This work represents a sustained effort to explore and develop new lines in the remote terrain of the Southern Los Padres while maintaining the bold, low-impact ethics that have historically defined traditional climbing.

Our Roots
Santa Barbara Rock Climbing represents the culmination of decades of professional guiding experience and backcountry exploration.
Founder Alex Bury began his professional guiding career with Matthew Fienup’s Earthworks, a respected Ventura County guide service, before establishing his own independent guiding operation in Ojai.
What ultimately became Santa Barbara Rock Climbing grew from Alex’s longstanding connection to the rugged terrain of the Southern Los Padres mountains and his desire to help others experience these landscapes safely and meaningfully.
Today, Santa Barbara Rock Climbing operates as a professional guide service dedicated to educating, supporting, and inspiring climbers exploring the Santa Barbara backcountry and the greater Central Coast.
