Make the Move, Take the Lead
About the Program
Multi-pitch… For countless climbers, stepping into the world of multi-pitch feels like entering climbing’s true frontier — a realm that exists not just in physical space, but in the feeling of being stacked hundreds to thousands of feet above the valley floor. From the earliest pioneers in the European Alps to modern climbers pushing into bigger and bolder terrain, multi-pitch has always represented adventure, uncertainty, challenge, and a kind of indescribable allure.
Experience that vertical magic with us. Our Multi-Pitch Sport Climbing Course is built for climbers who are ready to leave the single-pitch comfort zone and put real exposure beneath their feet. Since most climbers start indoors, then transition to outdoor bolted routes, the natural progression toward legendary destinations — Yosemite’s granite walls, the High Sierra, Italy’s Dolomites, the aiguilles of Chamonix, or the towers of Patagonia — runs straight through multi-pitch skill development. Those iconic areas are primarily home to “traditional” (trad) climbing, and multi-pitch trad demands an elevated level of technical expertise, judgment, and specialized gear.
While many world-class adventure climbing areas do contain the occasional bolted route, no one heads to places like Yosemite with the goal of clipping bolts all day. Yet the techniques required for multi-pitch sport climbing form the backbone of the far more expansive skillset needed for bigger, more adventurous objectives in breathtaking terrain. That’s why becoming proficient in multi-pitch sport systems is a pivotal milestone — a necessary step on the journey from casual climbing to realizing those bucket-list dreams.
Even for climbers who feel satisfied sticking to multi-pitch sport routes where they exist, the need for true competence doesn’t diminish. Leading multiple pitches, making decisions for a partner, and managing higher-consequence environments all require refined judgment and polished technical skills, particularly when you’re responsible for someone with less experience.
Framed by the dramatic sandstone cliffs, coastal mountains, and wild chaparral landscapes surrounding Santa Barbara, our course delivers the complete and essential toolkit for multi-pitch sport climbing. No fluff, no filler — every component is laser-focused on a critical, must-know skill. It’s the ideal progression for both locals and visitors who want to raise their abilities and step confidently into the world of real vertical adventure.
What You’ll Learn
Multi-pitch climbing introduces a whole new dimension of complexity, focus, and satisfaction. In Santa Barbara’s coastal mountains — where sandstone walls rise above sweeping ocean views — these skills become even more valuable. During this course, you’ll work one-on-one with an AMGA-certified guide with advanced training to build the precise movement, technical systems, and decision-making habits required for confident multi-pitch travel.
Instruction covers:
• Streamlined belay transitions and organized stance management
• Constructing and evaluating multi-directional anchors
• Rope systems for teams of two or three
• Techniques for belaying a second, both direct and redirected
• Clear communication methods across long or winding pitches
• Rappelling strategies, safety backups, and contingency options
• Self-rescue fundamentals
• Route planning, time management, and sequencing
• What to bring and how to pack it efficiently
You’ll apply everything on actual multi-pitch climbs in the Santa Barbara backcountry. By the end of the course, you’ll take the sharp end and lead each pitch on real routes, putting your full skillset into practice in authentic terrain rather than a simulated environment.
Who This Course Is For
• Sport climbers already leading outside (around 5.9 or above) who want to take on longer, more committing climbs
• Climbers with single-pitch experience — sport or trad — aiming to progress toward bigger mountain objectives
• Teams preparing for future missions in places like Yosemite, Tahquitz, the Tetons, the Alps, or Patagonia
Prerequisites:
Participants should be comfortable leading outdoor sport routes at 5.9 or higher and have a basic understanding of anchor cleaning or anchor management. No prior trad-leading experience is needed.
