Trad Climbing

Single Pitch

Trad is Rad

Step into the world of traditional climbing with the support, safety, and expertise of AMGA-certified professional guides. This program introduces you to the skills, judgment, and systems required to lead single-pitch trad routes — all set among the sculpted sandstone cracks and ridges of the Santa Barbara foothills.

Whether you’re a confident sport leader ready to expand your skill set, or you’re beginning your trad journey from the ground up, this course builds the competence and composure needed for gear-protected climbing. You’ll learn to place protection, assess risk in real time, and lead with intention on the stunning coastal stone that defines the Santa Ynez Mountains.

What You’ll Learn

This course focuses as much on decision-making as on physical movement. You’ll work directly with an AMGA-trained guide to understand not just how to place gear or build anchors, but why certain systems work — and what to do when conditions or terrain change.

You’ll cover:

  • Solid gear placements with nuts, cams, and passive pro

  • Assessing rock quality and reading crack features

  • Extending pieces and managing rope drag

  • Trad-specific anchor building and safe cleaning systems

  • Fall considerations unique to traditional climbing

  • Efficient racking, strategy, and route planning

  • Risk management in the dynamic sandstone terrain of Santa Barbara

You’ll spend the day placing gear, building anchors, mock-leading, and leading (when ready) with detailed feedback and coaching.

Who This Course Is For

Ideal for:

  • Sport leaders ready to transition into trad

  • Climbers preparing for destinations like Joshua Tree, Yosemite, or Tahquitz

  • Athletes wanting a stronger foundation in mountain craft

  • Anyone seeking greater independence and safety on gear-protected climbs

Prerequisites: Ability to lead 5.9 sport routes or a strong background in outdoor top-rope climbing.

Why Trad, and Why Santa Barbara?

Traditional climbing is a discipline built on judgment, creativity, and a deep relationship with the rock. Unlike sport climbing — where bolts dictate rhythm and spacing — trad climbing forces you to interpret terrain, choose your own protection, and make thoughtful decisions at every step.

Santa Barbara is one of the best environments in California to learn these skills. The region’s coastal sandstone formations offer approachable single-pitch cracks and unique natural features that make for excellent, low-pressure learning terrain — all with sweeping views of the Pacific and the coastal mountains.

Our team is committed to precision, safety, and mentorship — not just getting climbers to the top, but giving them the knowledge to climb independently with confidence.
